Nice Violetish Blue Natural Spinel

As a followup to yesterday’s blog, I thought it would be nice to show another side of the spinel family.  This lovely 4.28 ct. spinel is chemically a bit different than the classic red stones we looked at yesterday– spinels are members of a family of minerals, all of which are oxides of 2 metals.  The reds are oxides of magnesium and aluminum.  This gem is probably gahnospinel, an oxide of zinc and aluminum, although it may have a bit of magnesium as well.

Spinels like this are generally priced around $200 to $1000 per carat at retail, depending on the particular color, cut, clarity and carat weight. This beauty is $995, will be $696.50 during our Annual Sale. That’s 30% off, $162.73 per carat!

Think about it- a large well cut natural gemstone, highly transparent and sparkly, of a unique color, and hard enough to stand up to daily wear.  It would mount well in either white or yellow gold, and would be suitable for either a man’s or lady’s ring.  Or a gorgeous pendant! Or as the center of a bracelet!  Or…..?

And, this gem is natural color, not heat or enhancement of any kind.  Our custom designers would love to create the perfect mounting for this gorgeous gem.

Other spinels on sale include this lovely rose red gem, set in designer Phil Zahm’s elegant butterfly design in two colors of 18K gold, I-17401, $1695, a steal at $850.
