What is a “picture” stone?

November 20th, 2008 by James L. Sweaney, CGA, FGA. GG

Sometimes a gemstone can surprise us in very unexpected ways, painting a picture in the mind of the beholder.  A couple of years ago, I opened a shipment of opals from Lightning Ridge, Australia and was absolutely “rocked” by this magnificent boulder opal.

Being an avid fisherman, I’ve been traveling to Baja California and the Sea of Cortez for the past few years. A big part of the appeal to me is the raw beauty of the Baja.  Because we fish from small boats (pangas) and kayaks, we’re intimately connected to the elements, especially the water.

I’ve named this stone “Baja Sunrise” because it vividly evokes memories of stunning vistas where magnificent storm clouds rise from the blue water illuminated by the golden light of dawn.  My stone, not for sale!
